Polish Chickens

Polish chickens are a crested breed of chickens. Despite their name the breed is not from Poland, its name coming from the crests on the feathered caps traditionally worn by Polish soldiers. Credit for development of the breed is often given to Dutch breeders who refined the breed in the 1700s. Polish came to North America in the 1830s. By 1850 they were widespread and commonly used for egg production.  With the development of the Leghorn breed from the 1850-90s, polish lost favour as egg layers and were bred primarily for exhibition. They were recognized by the American Poultry Association in 1874.
